Youth engagement

Young people are among the most vulnerable to the dangers of drug use, especially in high risk communities where poverty, unemployment, family breakdown, and peer pressure are prevalent. Early exposure to drug use can lead to addiction, school dropout, conflict with the law, and serious health consequences, including HIV and mental illness

Youth Engagement

At The Omari Project, we recognize that engaging youth is essential for prevention, early intervention, and building a healthier generation. Our youth engagement strategy goes beyond messaging we work to equip young people with life skills, knowledge, confidence, and support systems that help them resist drug use and become advocates for positive change.

Youth Engagement in Drug Awareness and Prevention

Volunteer Activity 1

Youth Engagement through School-Based Activities

In Malindi, Magarini and Kilifi North, we run structured school programs targeting students in both primary and secondary institutions. Our aim is to raise awareness about drug risks, build resilience, and create safe spaces for dialogue among young people.

Key activities include:

Drug Awareness Talks and Workshops -We regularly visit schools to conduct interactive sessions on the dangers of drug use, how to deal with peer pressure, and the link between drugs and HIV/STIs. These talks are led by trained facilitators, including youth peer educators and individuals with lived experience who share their recovery journeys.

Teacher and Parent Engagement -We provide training and awareness for teachers and parents, helping them identify early signs of drug use, respond with compassion, and support affected learners. Strong adult support systems are critical to prevention.

Commemorating International Days -On days such as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and World AIDS Day, we engage schools in community marches, clean-up drives, poster competitions, and public speaking events — increasing visibility and awareness while encouraging youth participation.

Youth Engagement Beyond the Classroom

Youth-Friendly Services at Drop-In Centers (DICs) -We offer tailored services for young people who inject drugs (YPWIDs), including harm reduction education, psychosocial support, referrals to MAT and SRH services, and youth-led support groups.

Community Events and Edutainment -Through music, sports, art, and media platforms, we use creative, youth-driven methods to promote healthy lifestyles, reduce stigma, and open dialogue around drug use and mental health.

Youth Peer Educator Program -We recruit and train young peer educators from the community to reach their peers with credible information and support. These youth champions play a key role in outreach, referrals, and changing perceptions about drug use.
