Drug Dependancy treatment

Unlike responses that criminalize drug use, drug dependency treatment treats addiction as a chronic health condition that requires care, support, and compassion. The treatment approach focuses not just on stopping drug use but on stabilizing lives, restoring dignity, and reducing harm.

What is Drug dependancy treatment

Drug dependency treatment is integrated into the broader harm reduction model. It combines medical support, mental health care, and community-based services to guide individuals through recovery in a non-judgmental and supportive environment.

Principles of Drug Dependency Treatment

Treat Drug Dependence as a Chronic Health Condition

Drug dependency is a medical condition, not a moral failing or criminal issue. Like other chronic illnesses (e.g., diabetes or hypertension), it requires long-term care, consistent support, and management not punishment or exclusion.

Respect Human Rights and Dignity

Every person struggling with addiction deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, and without discrimination. This principle ensures that treatment is voluntary, confidential, and built on trust, protecting the client's rights throughout their recovery journey.

Provide a Comprehensive, Integrated Approach

Effective treatment must address all aspects of a person’s life not just the drug use. This includes physical health (HIV, Hepatitis, TB), mental health, psychosocial issues, family dynamics, and social reintegration. A multi disciplinary approach ensures a more sustainable recovery

Ensure Accessibility and Continuity of Care

Treatment should be easily accessible and available consistently, especially for marginalized communities. Services must be low-barrier, offered close to where people live, and coordinated with follow-up care to ensure continuity including induction, re-induction, and support for defaulters.

Encourage Community and Family Involvement

Recovery is strengthened when individuals are supported not just by professionals but also by families, peers, and communities. Engaging loved ones and community stakeholders fosters reintegration and helps reduce stigma and isolation.

Use Evidence-Based, Person-Centered Interventions

Treatment should be based on scientific evidence and tailored to individual needs. This includes using proven methods like Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST), cognitive-behavioral therapy, and peer support. Flexibility and personalization increase the chances of success.

The Omari Project’s Role in Drug Dependency Treatment

At The Omari Project, we are proud to lead efforts in comprehensive drug dependency treatment across Kilifi County, with active work in Malindi and Kilifi North.

We work hand in hand with the Malindi and Watamu MAT centers, offering support throughout the treatment journey — from initial screening and induction to ongoing psychosocial care and re-induction for clients who may have defaulted. Our teams play a vital role in:

  • Facilitating smooth referrals to MAT centers for clients who are ready to begin their treatment journey.
  • Supporting induction and re-induction processes, ensuring clients understand what to expect and are prepared emotionally and physically.
  • Providing on-site psychosocial support, helping clients cope with withdrawal, adjust to methadone, and deal with stigma or family-related issues.
  • Following up with defaulters, offering them a safe and respectful route back to care and preventing relapse.
  • Promoting medication adherence and linking clients to related health services, including HIV care and mental health support.
  • This close collaboration ensures that drug dependency treatment is not isolated to clinical settings but embedded in community-based support systems that increase retention and recovery outcomes.

At The Omari Project, we believe that every person has the potential to recover when given the right tools and support. Through our partnership with local MAT centers and our strong community presence, we continue to walk alongside our clients — not just helping them access treatment, but ensuring they thrive long after.

Our Impact on Lives and Communities

Thanks to this integrated approach, many of our clients in Malindi, Watamu, and surrounding areas have made remarkable progress:

  • Individuals once trapped in cycles of street-based drug use now lead stable lives under methadone treatment.
  • We have seen improved ART adherence and overall health outcomes among HIV-positive PWIDs on MAT.
  • Clients report greater self-worth, stronger family relationships, and reduced involvement in crime or violence.
  • Community stigma is slowly shifting, with more people recognizing that recovery is real and achievable
