ABUBAKAR FAMAU'S STORY

"My name is Abubakar, and my journey from addiction to advocacy has been transformative. After stopping heroin injection on February 25th, 2007, at Omari Project Rehabilitation Center in Msabaha, I express my deepest gratitude to Director Mr. Dilmua Mohamed and his team, as well as others who played a vital role in supporting my recovery and helping me maintain a drug-free life. I'm proud to have achieved 18 years, 4 months, and 2 days of sobriety. Since November 2007, I've been dedicated to giving back, starting as a volunteer and progressing through various roles: peer educator, outreach worker, paralegal officer, and currently serving as a Field Supervisor at The Omari Project. Through the Kenya Red Cross's harm reduction program, funded by the Global Fund, I've been able to provide health education and support to injecting drug users, focusing on preventing HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, hepatitis, and STIs. My work emphasizes promoting safer injecting practices, safer sex practices, risk reduction counseling, and referrals to MAT clinics for methadone treatment or The Omari Project rehabilitation center as needed. My ultimate goal is to create a community free from drugs, particularly among young people, by educating them about the risks of drug use and providing support for those who want to quit. I aim to reach youth both in and out of school, empowering them to make informed choices and live healthy lives."
