Community Reintegration of People Who Use and Inject Drugs (PWUD/PWIDs)

Community reintegration is a vital part of supporting people who use and inject drugs (PWUD/PWIDs) in rebuilding their lives with dignity, purpose, and belonging. At its heart, reintegration is about restoring individuals to full participation in society—economically, socially, and emotionally after periods of marginalization due to drug use, homelessness, incarceration, or health challenges. For PWUDs, the barriers to reintegration can be immense: stigma, broken family relationships, unemployment, homelessness, criminal records, untreated mental health issues, and lack of access to health services. Reintegration is therefore not just a one-time event, but a structured and supportive process that helps individuals reconnect with their families, communities, and livelihoods.

The Omari Project’s Role in Reintegration

At The Omari Project, community reintegration is a key outcome we strive for through our harm reduction and psychosocial support programs across Kilifi County. We recognize that recovery and wellness go beyond medical care — they require stable relationships, community acceptance, and meaningful engagement.

Our reintegration work includes:

  • Family Therapy and Mediation: We provide structured sessions to rebuild trust between PWUDs and their families. By addressing conflict, trauma, and misunderstanding, these sessions help restore family bonds, especially in communities like Malindi and Kilifi North, where social exclusion often begins at home.
  • Psychosocial Support Groups: Our Drop-In Centers (DICs) offer regular support groups for people living with HIV (PLHIV), those on PrEP, and female PWIDs. These safe spaces provide peer connection, mental health support, and an avenue for community-based healing.
  • Nutritional and Basic Needs Support: Recognizing the realities of poverty and street-based drug use, we provide daily hot meals, hygiene kits, and dignity packs at our DICs — giving clients the basic stability they need to start planning for the future.
  • Skill Building and Economic Linkage: While still limited by funding, we are gradually working with local partners to link clients to vocational training, small business support, and work-readiness programs, especially in Mariakani and Magarini, where informal job markets offer potential for sustainable income.
  • Safe Referrals and Linkages: We maintain strong partnerships with local health facilities, legal aid providers, and MAT clinics to ensure that clients moving into recovery have access to continuous care and support, without falling through the cracks.
  • Community Engagement and Sensitization: Reintegration is only successful if the community is prepared to welcome returning members. We conduct awareness campaigns, dialogues, and advocacy forums to reduce stigma and promote inclusion of PWUDs as people worthy of respect, support, and opportunity.

    Impact of Reintegration Efforts

Our reintegration efforts have led to tangible improvements in the lives of PWIDs:

Many have reconnected with their families and children after years of separation.

Clients have successfully transitioned from the streets into stable living arrangements, often with support from relatives or community networks.

Some individuals, especially in Malindi, have taken leadership roles as peer educators, outreach workers, or community mobilizers using their lived experience to help others reintegrate.

Communities are gradually shifting from rejection to understanding and acceptance, thanks to consistent engagement and visible change in reintegrated individuals.
